Saratoga Patch: What did you dream of being as a kid?

Kristina Rust: I am originally from a town of 900 and the idea of traveling was something I always dreamt about. I wanted to be a cruise director or travel agent. Although I didn't go down that path, I am thankful that I had parents who instilled this love of exploring and adventure in me as that is what brought me out to California.

Rust: I am an easy going, patient person, who loves to meet and connect with others. I think these traits are really important when working with others no matter what line of business you are in but are especially important for photographers. My goals is to create photo sessions that are fun and relaxed so that I can connect with my subjects and capture their true personality.

Patch: At what moment did you decide to open a business?

Rust: Four years ago, I decided to become a professional photographer. A friend of mine and I decided that we would create a photography business that was geared towards helping schools and organizations raise funds through photography (we were both very involved in fundraising at our elementary school). We did this for two years before deciding that we both wanted to pursue more creative, photographic endeavors. We decided to each branch out on our own and develop and grow our individual photography passions and businesses.

Patch: What inspired you?

Rust: Creating a business that provided me flexibility and one that was centered around my love of photography.

Patch: Describe the biggest challenge of owning a business in the Town of Saratoga?

Rust: Getting my name out there is the biggest challenge. I don't have a studio or storefront, so the majority of my clients come to me through referrals and networking.

Patch: Describe the best thing about owning a business in the town of Saratoga?

Rust: Saratoga is full of  beautiful parks and outdoor areas for photos. From Redwood trees, to large meadows, to brightly colored playgrounds, we have so many wonderful photo venue options.

Patch: What is one thing you would never change about your business?

Rust: I would never take the spontaneity out of my sessions (I do not have a cookie cutter approach). While I do approach each sessions with a basic plan or idea in mind, I love to let the day unfold and evolve so that I can capture images that truly showcase my client's personalities.

Patch: What is your business' greatest asset?

Rust: I would say me ... wow that sounds a bit narcissistic, but I think photography is about relationships and making connections. I think my ability to make people feel comfortable and at ease is what enables me to capture images that my clients love.

Patch: What is your favorite spot in town?

Rust: I love Wildwood Park. It is the perfect backdrop for photos. The trees, the bridge, the playground ... so many great options and settings all in one place.

Patch: What's one thing the community should know about you?

Rust: I take photos each and every day and can't imagine a life without my camera.
