Montalvo Art Center Announces 2014 Summer Camp Schedule

SARATOGA, Calif. — For the fifth summer in a row, Montalvo Arts Center is pleased to offer Silicon Valley families a robust schedule of 34 one-week- and two-week-long children’s summer camp programs focusing on music, dance, engineering, science, theatre, visual arts, and world culture. The first cycle of these classes begins on June 9 and the last runs through August 8.

Registration for the general public begins on February 24—with advance registration available for Montalvo members beginning February 14—and is available at montalvoarts.org/camps as well as through the Montalvo Box Office at 408-961-5858, M-F, 10am-4pm.

"You really won't find a camp program quite like Montalvo's anywhere else in the Bay Area," said Charlee Wagner, Montalvo Manager of Education Programs. "We offer everything from painting and creative writing to aerodynamics and digital photography. All of our camps are led by professional artist educators, so you can be confident that your kids are learning from experts. They'll acquire new skills, make new friends, and express themselves. Plus, they'll get to do it all outdoors in Montalvo's gorgeous park-like grounds."

A number of brand new camps will be offered this summer, including:

Explore, Expand, Experiment — Featuring Mentos Coke fountains, catapults, soapbox derby, baking soda and vinegar eruptions, this class introduces students to the weird and wonderful world of science. The laws of physics and chemistry will come alive during this week of fun and fascinating experimentation, and will teach campers the importance of inquiry.

Out on a Limb: Become a Treehouse Master! — Students will learn about architecture, engineering, and the use of tools and materials as they design and build a real tree house on the grounds of Montalvo! The finished structure will be part of Montalvo’s 2014 Art on the Grounds exhibition.

Poetry Slam! Find your Voice — Students will craft original poems and, in the oral traditions of monologue, slam poetry, and hip hop, they will learn to perform their work using improv and stage techniques.

You Rock: Make Your Own Music Video — Campers will conceptualize, film, edit, and perform in their own music video featuring a song of their choice. At the end of the week, every child will go home with a music video and some valuable digital media skills.

Some of Montalvo’s most popular camp sessions from previous summers will again be offered, updated with new subject matter:

Circus Arts — A Montalvo tradition! This camp is the perfect opportunity for children to learn juggling, clowning and basic acrobatics, while cultivating coordination, strength, and self-confidence.

Missoula Children's Theatre Camps — Your child will shine as they rehearse their roles throughout the week with professional actors and directors from Missoula Children’s Theatre, the country’s preeminent touring children’s theatre company.

Spy Camp — Prepare to be a spy! Students will explore Montalvo’s grounds, design a 3-D map of the property, unravel riddles, master secret codes, and use these tools to solve the mysteries hidden at Montalvo!

You Can Ukulele — Small, light, and easy to play, the ukulele has a signature sunny sound. Students will spend the week joyfully plucking away on this tiny titan of tone, learning basic chords and strumming favorite songs. And each student will take home their own ukulele!

The complete listing of dates and sessions are available online at montalvoarts.org/camps.
