Mindy Kaling's Book Is Funny, Interesting Read

A funny, clever and easy to read biography by Mindy Kaling, star of "The Mindy Project"

Mindy Kaling is best known as the character Kelly Kapoor in "The Office." She’s an American born Indian who, in the book, talks about looking a bit different than the typical Barbie Doll show business woman, and how this affects her life and choices.

She also stars in the newish TV show “The Mindy Project.”

Her 2011 book called Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (And Other Concerns) is in the same genre as the Chelsea Handler series and Tina Fey’s bestseller.

What people may not know is she started off as a writer on “The Office.” The ups and downs of her writing career take center stage in the book. Playing the Kapoor character on screen definitely takes a back seat in her life.

Kaling is a Dartmouth graduate who as a teenager always dreamed of writing comedy for the top “it” shows like Saturday Night Live and late night talk shows.

What’s refreshing is that she’s a good girl who, for example in the book, says she has never had a one night stand. So if you are looking for a crazy sexy tell-all of life in the fast Hollywood/New York lane, you aren’t going to get it.

It’s fantastic, super funny and interesting and I highly recommend it. There are also some cute photographs in the book of her New York roommates and co-writers on co-stars on “The Office.”

Kaling’s book was recommended to me by a book club friend who wanted a break from the seriousness of some of our recent club picks like "Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity" by Katherine Boo which is a journalistic, sad and shocking at times.

I enjoyed Mindy Kaling’s book immensely and hope that she pens a second one. She’s a professional writer in her early 30s so I anticipate that she will.
