Saratoga Hosts Memorial Day Observance

Service begins at 9:30 a.m. at Memorial Arch in Blaney Plaza.

Flags will mark each veteran's grave.

Laurel sprays will be placed at each flag.

Taps will echo through the cemetery.

The 85th annual Saratoga Memorial Day Observance is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.  Monday, May 27 at the Memorial Arch in Blaney Plaza.

Following the flag ceremony and the laying of the wreath there will be a procession to Madronia Cemetery, 14766 Oak St.

At 10 a.m. the observance continues. This year co-owner of Cooper-Garrod Estate Vineyards Bill Cooper and Saratoga High School senior Bennett Lopez will be the keynote speakers.

The observance is sponsored by the Saratoga Foothill Club, with the help of many community organizations, including Saratoga High School, Redwood Middle School and boys and girls scouts.

"It's important to remember and honor the men and women who serve in the United States military, and especially those who have given their lives so we can live in freedom," said Saratoga resident and Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District trustee Cynthia Chang, who's co-chairwoman of the event.

"Every generation is represented as we pay our respects and recognize our collective debt to those who have gone before us," she added.

Helping Chang coordinate the event are Nancy Miller and Anne Kolb. Details: Cynthia Chang, 408-867-7111.
