A Sunnyvale woman was killed in a crash on state Highway 85 in Saratoga late Monday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The woman, identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office as 64-year-old Mai Nguyen, was driving south on Highway 85 south of the Cox Avenue pedestrian overcrossing when the crash happened around 11:45 p.m.

Nguyen was driving a black 1995 Honda Accord that veered off the roadway for unknown reasons and traveled up an embankment, according to the CHP.

The Honda then overturned and came to rest back on the freeway, where it was hit by a 2002 gold Ford Taurus traveling at 60 to 65 mph, CHP officials said.

The driver of the Taurus, identified by the CHP as a 27-year-old Mountain View woman, braked when she saw the Honda but was unable to stop in
time, CHP investigators said.

She was not injured but was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center as precaution, according to the CHP.

Nguyen, who was alone in her car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP is investigating the cause of the crash, which prompted the closure of southbound lanes for several hours.
